Banking on Gen Z: uncovering ‘money mantras’ and household influences for product design

Context: With Gen Z (1995-2010) representing 25% of the Canadian population or $50B in buying power, an international Canadian bank was interested in exploring how they might offer enticing day-to-day banking options for this next wave of emerging users. As the first generation of digital natives, this group is uniquely positioned to lead customer expectations in digital banking of the future.

Outcome: Conducted primary research with families across Canada and youth workshops in Peru to uncover key insights about their mindsets on money. In addition, interviews with cross-sectoral subject matter experts working in the youth domain resulted in the development of a ‘Household Mindset & Persona Toolkit’, condensing the research into an accessible representation of how families with Gen Z children are structured by their experiences, money mantras and belief systems through the lenses of agency and involvement of the child. olution spaces were identified to activate near and long-term strategic planning, reduce attrition of this customer segment (current problem), increase deposits and secure and enable anticipated future transfers of wealth.
